What SIM cards can I use in the X5-Touch?

The Thuraya X5-Touch is a dual mode, dual SIM phone which uses nano-SIM cards in both SIM slots.

The Thuraya X5-Touch can be used with a GSM SIM card in satellite roaming mode or a Thuraya SIM card in GSM roaming mode if the GSM operator has a roaming agreement with Thuraya. Currently Thuraya has about 360 GSM roaming partners worldwide in more than 160 countries. Please check with your local GSM SIM card provider for the latest roaming charges.

What is the “dual active” feature of the X5-Touch?

The X5-Touch gives you a true dual active experience when using two SIMs in the phone. You can be contacted on your GSM number even while on an active satellite call - and vice versa

Do I need to physically move the SIM cards to switch between Satellite and GSM mode on the X5-Touch?

The X5-Touch allows you to swap your SIM cards for use in Satellite or GSM modes at the touch of a button, there is no need to physically move the SIM cards from one SIM slot to another. Simply go to your SIM card settings and choose the “Tap to swap” option, your X5-Touch will restart and your SIM card(s) will be associated with the other network type.

I’m connected to the Thuraya network but “Location update…” is flashing in the widget along with the satellite signal icon in the status bar. What does this mean?

If the satellite signal icon and “Location update…” are flashing on your home screen, it indicates that the device has not yet received the required location information from the satellites. To rectify this, please move to a place with an unobstructed view of the sky that will allow the Thuraya X5-Touch to receive its location information.

What is the talk time and standby time of the Thuraya X5-Touch?

The talk time of the Thuraya X5-Touch is up to 11 hours and the standby time is up to 100 hours.

What is the IP67 standard?

IP and IK are international industrial standards referring to degrees of ‘ingress protection’ for electrical devices.

IP67 standard: First digit 6x. Dust-tight. Full protection against interior injurious dust. That means dust cannot harm the operation of the phone. Second digit x7. Water-proof. Submersible under water up to 1m depth. Please note that the IP rating of the device does not make it resistant to all kinds of liquid, pressurized water and salt/sea water can harm the phone even with a high IP rating.

What is the MIL-STD 810 G/F standard?

MIL-STD 810 G/F is a United States Military Standard that defines the environmental ruggedness of products for use within military applications. The Thuraya X5-Touch complies with MIL-STD 810 G/F for Shock, Vibration and Extreme Temperature.

What are the specifications of the display?

The Thuraya X5-Touch has a 5.2 inch (13.2 cm) touchscreen and hardened Gorilla Glass® display with 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Can the touchscreen of the X5-Touch be used in rough conditions?

The touchscreen of the X5-Touch has been specially designed so that it can be used with gloves and even when the display is wet.

What is the brightness sensor?

The brightness sensor on top of the display regulates the brightness of the display according to ambient lighting conditions. In dark environments, the backlight of the display will be reduced, while backlighting will be increased in bright sunlight to provide optimal visibility. This also contributes to reduced battery consumption and thereby increases talk time and standby time.

Does the Thuraya X5-Touch have a navigation function?

The Thuraya X5-Touch has advanced navigation functions that are typical on most Android based smartphones. The preloaded Navigation app allows you to create and manage waypoints. These can be used to navigate from a fixed location to various waypoints, showing the distance and direction to each.

In addition you can send your coordinates by SMS to another person to inform them about your location. Also, you can view the sensitivity of the GPS, BeiDou and Glonass navigation systems that your X5-Touch is using.

What safety features does the Thuraya X5-Touch have?

The X5-Touch has a dedicated SOS button which is easy to use in times of distress. Even when the phone is switched off, simply press and hold the SOS button for 3 seconds. This starts the phone and triggers the emergency service (call and/or SMS) to any pre-programmed number.

What are the different Tracking modes available to me on the X5-Touch?

With the X5-Touch, you can send your coordinates based on:

Amount of distance travelled
When moving inside or outside a preset geofence

In which countries can I use the Thuraya X5-Touch?

In satellite mode: Thuraya X5-Touch can be used across the Thuraya network covering more than 160 countries or two-thirds of the globe in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Please look up our coverage map for more information.
In GSM mode: Thuraya X5-Touch can be used in most countries across the world. The following frequencies are covered:

Which access points (APNs) are available for use with Thuraya GmPRS?

The standard APN for GmPRS services on Thuraya handsets is ‘GET’. To increase the speed when loading websites you can also use one of Thuraya’s APNs with built-in compression: the APN ‘GETLC’ provides low compression rates (images on websites will be compressed), and the APN ‘GETHC’ provides high compression rates (images will not be downloaded to reduce website loading time). Depending on your requirements, select the most suitable APN in the GmPRS settings on your Thuraya handset.

What is the operating temperature range for Thuraya X5-Touch?

The operating temperature range is between -20 °C and 60°C for Thuraya X5-Touch.

What is the maximum temperature after which warning sign of high temperature is displayed on the screen of Thuraya X5-Touch?

The warning message of high temperature is displayed when the battery or the Thuraya X5-Touch temperature exceeds 45°C.

What happens if I see warning sign of high temperature on Thuraya X5-Touch?

As a built in safety precaution, the device stops charging the battery as soon as the battery temperature is detected as 45°C. Please note that this has no impact on operation of the handset. The Thuraya X5-Touch battery cannot be charged until the temperature drops below 45°C.

Thuraya X5-Touch will shut down automatically as a safety measure.

Yes it does. Your smartphone can still be used to make non-satellite calls while connected to the SatSleeve unit. Please note that you will not be able to use data connectivity in terrestrial mode (e.g. 3G/LTE) while connected to the SatSleeve unit.

Which SIM card can be used in the Thuraya SatSleeve+ or Hotspot?

The Thuraya SatSleeve+ and Hotspot can be used across the Thuraya network either with a Thuraya SIM card or with a standard GSM SIM card from over 390 worldwide GSM operators across more than 150 countries.

How long does the battery last?

Usage time: 3 hours for talk and data usage

Standby time:

9 hours with Wi-Fi continuously on and connected to the smartphone
70hrs with Wi-Fi turned off with the ability to receive incoming calls and use the SOS function on the main unit

Does the SatSleeve main unit have its own microphone and speaker?

Yes, the SatSleeve unit comes with its own microphone and speaker, which can be used when using the SatSleeve unit in SOS mode or with Wi-Fi off, without the smartphone connected.

How can I turn off Wi-Fi to save battery and use the SatSleeve unit without being connected to the smartphone?

Go to the Wi-Fi settings in the SatSleeve Hotspot app and tap the Wi-Fi off button, you will then be disconnected from the smartphone and the App.

For incoming calls: the SatSleeve unit will give you a vibration alert when an incoming call is coming through and you can pick it up by pressing the SOS button. To disconnect the call, press the SOS button again.

For outgoing calls: the SOS button can be used to call one pre-programmed number of your choice.

Please note: to turn on the Wi-Fi functionality again in order to reconnect to your smartphone, please turn the SatSleeve unit off and then on again.

How do I know when the battery of the Thuraya SatSleeve+ or Hotspot is fully charged without having the Hotspot App open?

The LED on the SatSleeve unit will turn from red to blue.

Which languages does the Hotspot App support?

The Thuraya SatSleeve Hotspot App supports the following languages: Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese (Simplified), English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

*Please note that from iOS13 onwards, the phone will only ring during an incoming call if the SatSleeve app is open. Otherwise, the phone will show a missed call (you will be able to call back). This is a limitation from Apple that is beyond our control.

Note: Even though officially from Apple, the SatSleeve+ / Hotspot app is only compatible with the iOS versions listed above, some users have mentioned that a workaround might work for older versions of iOS:

If you’ve previously installed the app on your phone, you'll find it in your device's App Store under the Purchased tab.
If you’ve never previously installed, or you're using a new Apple account, just go to the App Store in iTunes on or computer and download SatSleeve+ / Hotspot. It doesn't matter what version that is; you just need to have the SatSleeve+ / Hotspot app as a "Purchased" app on your Apple account.

Now you can go back to the Purchased tab on your device, and you should find SatSleeve+ / Hotspot there. Hit that Install button and you should be offered the option to download a previous version.

I’m connected to the Thuraya network but the GPS icon in the status bar keeps on flashing. What does it mean?

If the GPS icon flashes, it indicates that the device does not have a “GPS-fix” (i.e. the unit could not receive the GPS position from the GPS satellites). To rectify this, please move to a place with an unobstructed view of the sky that will allow the SatSleeve+ or Hotspot to receive its GPS position.

How can I receive incoming calls when the smartphone is connected but the Hotspot App is not open?

The main unit of the SatSleeve will give a vibration alert to indicate incoming calls. All you have to do is open the Hotspot App and then accept the call.

What happens if I am on a satellite call and there is an incoming GSM call?

When this happens, your satellite call will be disconnected.

Can I connect multiple smartphones to the Thuraya SatSleeve+ or Hotspot in parallel?

No, only one unit can be connected at a time.

Can I do a data session in parallel with a voice call?

No, only a voice call or a data session at a time can be established.

What is the maximum Wi-Fi range of the SatSleeve Hotspot?

The Wi-Fi range is up to 30 metres.

How long does it take to charge the Thuraya SatSleeve+ or Hotspot?

It takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to charge an empty SatSleeve+ or Hotspot.

What accessories are available for the SatSleeve+ and Hotspot?

There are a number of accessories which complement the SatSleeve+ and Hotspot, such as car chargers, travel chargers, USB data cables, solar chargers, spare batteries, indoor repeaters, Universal adaptor and Hotspot stand.

What if I forget the Wi-Fi password of the SatSleeve+ or Hotspot?

If you’ve forgotten the Wi-Fi password of your SatSleeve+ or Hotspot, follow these steps to reset the password back to 12345678:

Make sure your SatSleeve+ or Hotspot is turned on
Open the battery cover of the SatSleeve+ or Hotspot
Press the round button below the battery with a pen / pencil for 5 seconds

Which smartphones can be docked using the Universal adaptor?

The Universal adaptor can hold smartphones from between 58 – 85mm in width.

Can I use the Hotspot stand with the SatSleeve+ or the Universal adaptor with the SatSleeve Hotspot?

Yes, you can buy the Universal adaptor or Hotspot stand separately as accessories to convert your SatSleeve+ into a hotspot-style device and the SatSleeve Hotspot into a walk-and-talk device.

How do the Thuraya SatSleeve+ and Hotspot work? What are their features?

The Thuraya SatSleeve+ and Hotspot are devices that allow smartphone users to turn their phone into a satellite smartphone, giving them the ability to have reliable connectivity beyond the coverage of traditional terrestrial networks.

They work by using the SatSleeve Hotspot App that can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play. Simply connect your smartphone to the Wi-Fi chip of the SatSleeve unit and make calls and send messages in satellite mode. The smartphone can access email and popular social media and messaging apps such as Twitter and WhatsApp among many others. Thuraya SatSleeve+ and Hotspot users can post news updates, chat via message apps with their contacts as well as send and receive emails from the most remote locations in satellite mode.

What is the difference between the SatSleeve App and SatSleeve Hotspot App which are both available on the app stores?

The SatSleeve Hotspot App is meant to be used only with the new generation SatSleeve+ and SatSleeve Hotspot devices.

The SatSleeve App is meant to be used only with the previous generation SatSleeve models, i.e. SatSleeve Voice, SatSleeve iPhone and SatSleeve Android.

What network do the Thuraya SatSleeve+ and Hotspot run on, in which countries can I use them?

The Thuraya SatSleeve+ and SatSleeve Hotspot work in satellite mode throughout Thuraya’s entire network which covers two thirds of the globe across Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

What is the data speed of the Thuraya SatSleeve+ and Hotspot?

The Thuraya SatSleeve+ and Hotspot provide you with access to emails, instant messaging, apps and basic Internet connectivity in satellite mode. If you choose to access the Internet in satellite mode with the SatSleeve+ or Hotspot, please note that satellite data speeds are not as fast as 3G or 4G terrestrial networks. Data download speeds in satellite mode are up to 60 kbps for downloads and up to 15 kbps for uploads on GmPRS.

For the best internet experience using your Thuraya SatSleeve+ or Hotspot:
When emailing or messaging, reduce the size of images to decrease the overall message size
Use mobile versions of websites and Apps (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) rather than desktop versions of websites
Use web browsers that offer the option of text-only browsing or use websites that convert webpages into text-only pages, e.g. Opera Mini

How much power can the PoE ports deliver?

All four Ethernet interfaces support up to 15 Watts of power to each PoE powered device. The total power supplied by the PoE is limited to 30W maximum for 12V installations. The BDU automatically detects the class of the device plugged in and will apply power so that the total cannot exceed these limits. If the user attempts to connect a combination of devices that require more than this, the BDU will not power any devices that would cause the limit to be exceeded.
